Mycelium Forest as an Urban Planting Strategy

Starting from the machine drawing, the water flow disrupted the circles originally generated based on the relationship between light and shadow, forming the space with characteristics of dynamic ambiguity.

Then, in order to explore the logic of instability, a new 3D printing technology was developed to control the uncontrollable, creating a series of cohesive, organic, and malleable spaces. In this context, the 3D printer was regarded as “water”, triggering the formation of ambiguity through constant structural testing.

I approached the mycelium landscape as a system of flows and connections by redefining the concept of forest to a compound system through spaces with different access methods for both humans and nonhumans. In such a context, mycelium is not only a natural element of the ecosystem, with the characteristics of ecological construction and easy decomposition but also as a mechanism for deconstructing the fabric of the existing landscape. 3D printing the whole forest with living mycelium as a system to define both a structural and spatial logic, and thus redefine the internalization or externalization of “trees” in forests. Integrating mycelium production, processing, and industrial application, the concept of productive forest can be fully radicalized. By exploring the dynamic boundaries between new mycelium forests and existing forests, different types of “mycelium moment” can be created as an archetypal landscape and an alternative urban planting strategy.
