This is a campus building renovation project. In addition to structural renewal, I pay more attention to the value and influence of the new building on the campus. I prefer to name the building “heterotopies” cause as soon as it is labelled “library”, the thing itself as a space for a certain open exchange and discussion is clinically dead.
I imagine the school library and co-working space as an ecosystem, as an open, fluid system in which a set of actors establish an exchange of knowledge and energy, in a delimited but permeable area. I use a “religious ”knowledge cube, encounter space and open platform to transform college life into an event that can be reflected, criticized, and imagined.
“Heterotopies” originated from Foucault’s space philosophy. It challenges the classicism’s interpretation of space, where space and time are used as a structural framework, and “events” are packed into this framework as “content.” “Heterotopia” means that a real space contains several different space types that are contradictory or conflicting at the same time, and these different spaces can be observed or imagined. In this project are a meditation room composed of a sequence of classical spaces, a large platform working layer bred under the contemporary high-efficiency cooperation mode, and a cube representing the form of future knowledge constitute a heterotopia. As an ecosystem, it reminds students of their attitudes towards knowledge: we are not living in a teaching building to passively acquire knowledge. Our behaviors, together with the self-evolution of the knowledge space, constitute the sum of social relations.
